Where in the world could you go that the people there haven't heard of California?
I can't imagine that there is such a place. It seems that there is no where else in the state left to discover. It only seems that way, there's Downieville! Being situated in the Lost Sierra Nevada Mountains has kept our village hidden from the casual tourist. It seems that you must have us in mind to find us. And so we've been left with our original character and beauty. Our size and location has much to do with our escaping the crazy growth of the rest of the state. We have a pub, a post office, and a couple of churches, That makes us a village. We also have five eating establishments, five bridges, four rivers, and a longer history than most other places in California. Main Street, Downieville is also the Yuba Donner Scenic Byway (soon to become the Yuba River National Scenic Byway) that passes through Sierra County on Highway 49. All around us are tall mountains of the Tahoe National Forest. That gives us the appearance of being in the Southern Alps with a kiss of Ireland. Perhaps that's why we're a popular destination for Europeans. The preservation of Downieville has made it unique in this changing world. Don't miss it!
